On 14 March 2024, the Friends of ERA looked behind the scenes of the Legal Service of the European Parliament and engaged in an online panel discussion with Dr Norbert Lorenz, Director of the Legal Service of the European Parliament in Luxembourg.
Starting with an introduction to the Legal Service, Mr Lorenz gave an insightful and highly professional, yet very pleasant and accessible, presentation on the workings behind the scenes of the European Parliament. The European elections were then put under the spotlight and participants had the opportunity to ask Mr Lorenz questions and take part in a rich and lively exchange to get a better understanding of the issues.
In a nutshell, the Legal Service provides legal assistance for Parliament’s political bodies and for its Secretariat, helps the committees with their legislative work, and represents the European Parliament in European and national courts. These core competences were illustrated with concrete examples.
Another topic for discussion were the European elections, when over several days in June 2024 citizens in more than two dozen countries across Europe will be called upon to submit their vote in the 10th European Parliament elections and to determine who will sit as legislators for the next five years. The discussion touched upon legal implications, electoral processes, and the impact on European citizens.
The event was held in German, online. We would like to thank Prof. Dr. iur. Ulrich Rommelfanger for his many years of great commitment as the coordinator of the German Chapter.
