Human Rights after Brexit: Enforcement Challenges in Northern Ireland

On Thursday evening, 12 March 2026, the UK Chapter invited the Friends of ERA and hosted an online session on:

Human Rights after Brexit:
Enforcement Challenges in Northern Ireland

with contributions from:

  • Éilis Haughey, Director of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (Human Rights after EU Withdrawal)
  • Edel Quinn, Senior Policy Research Officer, Northern Ireland Equality Commission

Éilis Haughey and Edel Quinn outlined the legal provisions surrounding Article 2 of the Windsor Framework. They explained its relevance for the protection of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement, in which human rights and equality play a central role. The presentations also covered the Dillon case, currently pending before the UK Supreme Court, and examined how EU law continues to provide a framework for the Agreement’s principles of Rights, Safeguards, and Equality of Opportunity.

We were also pleased to welcome the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) as a new institutional member of the Friends of ERA. In addition, several new guests joined the event.

We are always happy to expand with new members, as the activities of the Association are nurtured by the wide range of expertise and interests within its community. This is how the Friends of ERA benefit from the diversity of this international network.
